In this blog post, we explain is why mentorship so integral to our culture at Moberg, the impact it has on both our mentors and mentees, and how we actively mentor young talent, including students at the University of Applied Sciences in Zagreb.

Engineering excellence begins with a great mentor!

At Moberg, mentorship plays an essential role in shaping our employees' future, the success of our organization, and the IT community at large. It ensures that our engineers are not just highly skilled but continuously growing, evolving, and refining their craft - an essential trait in our industry where technology and best practices change at lightning speed. Mentorship encourages a culture of lifelong learning, where no one stops growing, no one stops sharing, and no one stops striving for excellence.

Our approach to mentorship is deeply rooted in open communication, trust, and mutual respect. A strong mentoring relationship thrives when the mentor and the mentee feel comfortable sharing ideas, feedback, and challenges. At Moberg, we cultivate an environment where honesty and openness are valued, making it easier for our engineers to ask questions, experiment with new ideas, and grow in their roles.

Mentorship provides our junior engineers and students unique opportunities for constructive feedback and guidance on their career paths. For our mentors, it's a chance to pass on invaluable experience, build leadership skills, and create meaningful relationships within the team. This transparency and open dialogue form the foundation for innovative thinking, benefiting our clients and projects.

Moreover, we see kindness and humility as essential in the workplace, not just as personal traits or client relations but as the cornerstones of a successful mentorship relationship. As mentors, we understand that everyone brings their unique strengths and challenges. We aim to share knowledge and create a supportive environment where younger engineers feel comfortable learning, making mistakes, and growing from those experiences.

Through mentorship, we emphasize the importance of empathy and patience. By guiding with humility, our mentors model the behaviors that contribute to a positive, productive, and inclusive work culture. This approach allows us to guide the next generation of engineers in a way that celebrates their individuality, supports their development, and helps them feel valued as part of the wider Moberg team.

Mentoring young talents: Student competition TVZ Mc2

One of the most rewarding aspects of our mentorship initiatives is our active involvement with students at the University of Applied Sciences in Zagreb, particularly in the TVZ Mc2 competition. This collaboration allows us to work directly with the brightest young minds and provide them with the tools they need to succeed in the real world.

The TVZ Mc2 competition is a perfect example of how mentorship can create a bridge between academic learning and industry experience. Our mentors work closely with students, helping them refine their skills, understand real-world challenges, and apply their academic knowledge meaningfully. Interacting with our engineers gives students hands-on experience with the cutting-edge technologies we use, helping them gain confidence and develop the problem-solving skills necessary for a career in software development and data engineering.

Jurica Leljak has joined our company after the successful completion of the TVZ Mc2 Pitch:

"Being part of the TVZ Mc2 competition and working with the Moberg mentors was an awesome experience. They were super helpful, not just with the tech side of things but also with how things work in the real world. After the competition, I got the chance to join the team. Now, I’m working as a backend .NET developer and loving it. If you’re thinking about joining the competition, go for it - and make the most of your mentors! Having the right mentor can seriously help you grow faster and find your direction."

We see the partnership as mutually beneficial—while the students gain valuable experience, our engineers have the chance to refine their mentoring skills, stay up to date with emerging trends, and contribute to the broader tech community.

The benefits of mentorship for both mentors and mentees

Mentorship is a two-way street. While we may often focus on the growth and development of the mentee, mentorship also provides numerous benefits for the mentor. Our senior engineers actively participate in mentoring younger colleagues for several reasons.

Firstly, mentoring fosters leadership skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and the ability to provide constructive feedback. These skills are essential for any senior professional looking to take on greater responsibility within the organization.

Furthermore, teaching and mentoring others requires keeping up with industry trends, technologies, and best practices. Our mentors continue to sharpen their skills by sharing their knowledge and expertise with mentees.

Third, and most importantly, our Lead Engineer, Domagoj Medo, points out that mentorship increases job satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment:

"I never have any difficulty mentoring younger colleagues because I genuinely enjoy helping others. I don't consider myself a mentor, as teaching others what I know comes naturally to me. Ultimately, through this process, we all grow as better colleagues and experts."

The benefits for mentees are equally significant. They gain insight into real-world engineering practices, receive valuable feedback from experienced professionals, and develop confidence in their abilities. Moreover, they benefit from the encouragement and guidance of mentors who help them navigate challenges and refine their skills.

Our work is only as strong as the people behind it

At Moberg, mentorship is vital to our organizational culture. It aligns with our core values. It ensures that we continue to grow, innovate, and deliver high-quality solutions to our clients. With a culture of learning, sharing, and collaboration, we strengthen our team and empower the next generation of engineers to excel in their careers.

We are committed to being part of the larger community. Through mentorship, we aim to contribute to the growth of young talent, both within our company and beyond. As we continue to mentor students and junior engineers, we know we are building a stronger future for the IT industry—one grounded in engineering precision, human-centered technology, transparent collaboration, and kindness and humility.

Are you ready to elevate your career? Whether you're just starting, building your engineering expertise, or refining your leadership abilities, Moberg offers a great environment for growth. Let's create opportunities for growth, learning, and mentorship together.
